Shell Hunter

The Shells Shell Hunter and Her Prizes

On the afternoon of February 9, 2003, Jobana and her father went out on a walk around their quint little island home of Nojima. One thing that Jobana really likes to do is collect the many shells that are all over the beach on both the sea and mote sides of the island. While clams in white, black, and shades in between are the norm, this afternoon she found some snail shells (?) that are real gems (see above).

While walking, Jobana called the muddy landscape the father and daughter were walking through, full of watery holes left by clam diggers earlier in the day, the "Shell Jungle." After finding the first shell (the red one, upper-right), her father was sure they wouldn't find another specimen nearly as nice. But Jobana proved him wrong, finding the largest of her bounty (upper-left) about 10 meters from the first.

Jobana insisted that they needed to find a third. "Because," she said, "three is a good number." So the two "jungle" explorers continued their journey until just before the land turned into sea, with a tall sea wall raising high on their left. Just as her father was saying they needed to turn around and head back up, Jobana found the little white shell that turned out to be her favorite catch of the day. Three turned out to be the "lucky number" Jobana had predicted.
