watching paint dry refers to something which is boring, tedious, something which takes too long, and so on

- A:- So, how was the Polish movie at the culture centre the other night?
- B:- Well I don't understand a word of Polish, there were no subtitles and
the film went on for three hours, but my girlfriend insisted we stayed
until the bitter end. Watching paint dry would have been more interesting!

- The baseball game went into extra time with both teams tied at zero zero.
The game continued until after 11 at night but neither team could break the deadlock.
It was a bit like watching paint dry since there wasn't much action from either team.

A is telling B about his first visit to his girlfriend's parents' house.
- B:- So how did your introduction to your girlfriend's parents go?
- A:- Well, they don't like to talk very much. They served me tea and
biscuits and I tried to get a conversation going and make a good
impression but her father was more interested in watching the TV and
her mother just kept going into the kitchen all the time. It was a long
night.
- B:- Like watching paint dry, was it?
- A:- You could say that.

- A:- How long do the staff meetings usually go on?
- B:- Forever, usually.
- A:- Huh?
- B:- The headmaster loves the sound of his own voice. I'm sure he enjoys
staff meetings but for the rest of us watching paint dry would be more
exciting.

The passengers had to sleep in the airport lobby until the strike had been settled.
