Whistler knew his powers, of course, but he was painfully aware of his defect-in drawing, for instance, wrote his architect friend, Frederick Jameson.
To improve his drawing skills, he attended evening class in Chelsea.
Then he made his debut as a portrait painter with his mother's portrait in 1871.
